Simba was transferred to MSIR after his owners dumped him at a kill shelter. He was given up because they had *too* many dogs. Simba didn't understand why he was given up. He curled into a ball and faced the wall in his kennel run. He was very cautious when he first arrived in foster care. He watched everyone carefully from his crate and started to come out of his shell once he realized he was in a safe home. Simba is a very gentle, sweet dog -- and simply the cutest little guy.
Simba's favorite thing to do is *steal* all the toys from the other dogs and create his own personal pile of toys. Then, he'll proceed to tear out the stuffing to find the squeakers.
He walks gently (although a bit hesitantly) on leash with no pulling. It seems that being on a leash is new to him. He enjoys being with other dogs and always greets new dogs appropriately. He enjoys riding in the car (but he needs to be attached to a seatbelt strap since he moves around lots). He is happy to sit on your lap. He loves to have pets on the head and enjoys any attention he is given.
Simba sleeps in a crate at night and will whine quietly when he needs to go out in the morning -- so far we have not heard him bark but he does howl when incredibly excited or when someone he is not expecting (like workmen) go into the yard. Simba is crate trained (although at times he'd rather not be in a crate) and potty trained.
Simba was well behaved at the vet and during a bath.
Most shibas are door bolters and care should be taken around doors and other escape routes. Simba, like most shibas, has escaped before. Simba can climb chain link fences so a family must have a privacy fence or walk him on leash. Simba tends to hide if scared by situations or loud noises.
We plan to place Simba in a home with another dog since he gets along well with other animals. Simba will do best with a securely fenced in backyard and in a calm environment. He seems to prefer women to men - but does well with men that are used to being with a shy dog. Simba needs time to get to know new people and become accustomed to new situations - so his new owners will need to be patient and give him the time he needs to feel safe and secure.
DUE TO THE BREED'S INDEPENDENT NATURE, SHIBAS "MUST ALWAYS BE LEASHED" OUTSIDE A SECURE AREA!
Simba will be adopted to a family willing to commit to obedience classes and must be willing to keep him securely leashed when he is outside of a fenced-in area. Simba easily slips out of his collar and must be walked on a harness - this will be a requirement for his adopters.
His adoption fee is $350. (Please refer to MSIR website for application and adoption process).

|
- Upon completion of each positive motivation-based obedience class, MSIR
will rebate the new adopters $25.
- And, upon earning a Good Canine Citizen certificate, MSIR will rebate
another $25!
Any one interested in adopting must first complete an
adoption
application and indicate, in the comments section, their interest in Simba.
The entire adoption
process is outlined on our web site. Once the adoption application is received, the state home visit coordinator will contact you.
